Gorbachev Urges G8 to Sponsor Solar Power

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev urged the world's biggest industrialized nations to create a 50-billion-dollar (44-billion-euro) fund to support solar power, saying that oil or nuclear energy were not viable energy sources for the future.
Gorbachev -- who chairs an environmental think tank, Green Cross International -- called on leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) industrialized nations to invest in renewable energy sources, in a statement marking the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
As leader of the Soviet Union in 1986, Gorbachev led the immediate response to the world's worst nuclear disaster, which led to at least 4,000 deaths and sent a radioactive cloud over parts of Europe.
The Green Cross proposals were contained in a letter sent to the leaders of the G8 who are due to meet in Russia in July.
"This idea reflects our vision of a way of helping the energy-impoverished in the developing world, while creating concentrations of solar energy in cities that could be used to prevent blackouts," Gorbachev stated. Solar energy would also "lower electricity bills, and would provide a source in the future for generating renewable hydrogen fuels, The fund could easily be raised by cutting subsidies for fossil fuels like oil and coal." he added
Rising oil prices and supply, as well as the growing need to combat global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions, have raised the profile and economic viability of some renewable energy sources.
Those concerns have also sparked renewed interest in nuclear power as a source of climate-friendly energy.
The debate has been amplified by the need for some European countries to plan soon for the replacement of earlier generations of nuclear power stations that are due to come to the end of their lifespan in the next two decades.
However Gorbachev has said that nuclear power "doesn't add up economically, environmentally or socially".
"Nuclear power is neither the answer to modern energy problems nor a panacea for climate change challenges," he claims.
Green Cross said nuclear technology requires huge amounts of initial capital, while decommissioning plants is hugely expensive and costs continue to be incurred long after a nuclear power station is closed.
Direct subsidies to nuclear energy in the United States totaled 115 billion dollars between 1947 and 1999 with a further 145 billion dollars in indirect subsidies, according to the non-governmental agency.

On Tuesday April 25, 2006 the president of United States of America decided that somehow one of the ways to reduce high gas prices is to wave the "Clear Air Act Summer Fuel Requirements". There are places like Los Angeles that pollution is the #1 killer; I am pretty sure that now with this wavier the pollution in the entire country will increase dramatically. As we all know in the summer the bad air stays very close to the ground and even closer than any other time of the year. Thank to the kind Mr. George Walker Bush now United States of America will be even more polluted and the number of death thanks to pollution will increase. Lets don't forget that pollution is why we have higher temperatures every year, why the ice at the North and South Poles is decreasing fast, which means that the end of the world is coming like crazy and instead of having a president that will push car manufactures to work on creating vehicles that run on fuels other than gas he helps oil companies make more money and their CEOs retire with hundreds of millions of dollars and destroy our planet.

Why U.S.A. is where it is?

I thing that part of the problem is that the people only talk butdon't walk (talk the talk, walk the walk), I thing the government has toomany powers, and the electoral college should be doomed, come to thingpeople elected Bush once and then twice, just because his daddy"stopped" the cold war, in my opinion Ronald Reagan did it no Bush Sr. also a lot of people protested in the last presidential elections butwhen time came it was clear the Bush Jr. will win.Which makes people who (know) and (thing) invisible from the crowed.Reagan is the only U.S president that I respect.

I do honestly believe that crude oil and its shortages will be the catalystthat will change the way the world politics are setup and will bring about aneed for more unified "World" leaders, not independent presidents, queens, kings, etc. We have many interesting times ahead of us for sure. You are correct in that many people (those who are aware and have theability to use common sense) tend to become invisible in crowds.I have spent years doing exactly what I did the other day. I personally thing that the biggest problem in nowadays is that people don't "stand up". You said that Bush Jr. is trying to win "daddy's approval" I thingdaddy is being the president of U.S. yet again through his son. Toomany people are giving credit to Bush Sr. such as the Cold War withthe Soviet Union. I don't recall the "feelings between Bush Sr. and Saddam". U.S. truly need a civil war with it's government, I thing the constitution is good the way it is, howeverthe amendment have to be rewritten all 27 of them, it is a pure shamefor your founding father what is going on right now, they have foughtwith tariffs, boycotts, have created parties such as The Boston TeaParty, I said your founding father because I am from Bulgaria (southeast Europe) and came here 5 years ago, now people thing ofnothing but themselves, as you know many paragraphs of theconstitution start with "We the people" or give the majority power to"The People". In the 90s the people from my country and me startedprotest meeting for about 5 months in the middle of the winter tooverthrow the Communist government and we succeeded. Another thing I don't understand why people can't vote for thing likeabortion or gay right. In nowadays people are so cruel that if you don't have new shoos everysix month you suck, or you don't buy new clothes every week you arebroke, it is better for a family to have an abortion if they are notready for a baby than to have to raise it in such environment whichcan cause psychological disorders, also many males pull out of arelationship after they find out that they are about to be fathers andI don't thing it is easy for a woman to rise a child alone, manyfemales in New York ting allot for their careers but they have sex andhave good chance to get pregnant which means that those kids are about be alone with babysitter or nannies probably 18 hours a day.Also it is very unlikely that a male or female says that they don'tlike something about the other gender and now they are gays, 90% ofthe gays and most likely more than those gays are born, it is in thesex genes. I thing that not excepting gays is a type of sexualharassment. They are dangerous as we are. If you have noticed the people that are confessing that they are gay are prosperous people,not people from under the bridge, and I thing gay marriage should belegalized in all countries around the world. I also agree that what is happening concerning Mother Nature is aresult to how we treat her. (You get treated the way you tread). Somescientists say that the icebergs would be gone by 2050; I would besurprised if it gets that long.

Talking about high-definition plasma screen.

On Tuesday April 18, 2006 Panasonic reviewed their new 103 inch high-definition plasma at the weight of 400 pound. I personally don't know what is the race for making bigger high-def. plasma rather than making the once that are already out cheaper. As I can imagine maybe we will have to own houses with higher floors just for the screens, there are also few projector that have the high- def. option and you still can make the image as big as you want and it doesn't weight 400 pounds and it is very compatible.

It is not the Oil Companies that set the gas prices.

There is less oil than there is demand in the world, and that is why oil prices go high, the oil companies have nothing to do with it. I am taking Economic class and that is how I know, not by someone that is working in oil company. Right now the perscentage of oil that U.S. is importing is about 30% imagine what it will be in few years when the percentage of oil that is importet goes up, and it will only go up. The Middle East is holding the oil of the future.

that guy is a nothing, in the 2005-2006 season he had been part in only 47 games for the entire season and he gets so much money, every time somebody touches him on the court he get "serious pain" and misses like from a month to 2 months. I thing he should get the money for the games he played and give back the rest to the "Houston Rockets"
